Clarice Talk AI. Is AI conscious? Is AI sentient? We're going to talk about these very big issues today with our special guest Ronnie Rios from Clarice and Chris DiPolitis here. And Chris, I have a question. You presented at a conference, was it last week, on AI? What happened? Well, it went well. I will have to say, though, that my week started off interestingly. My dad and stepmom picked me up from the airport when I got into Milwaukee, where the conference was. And they said, hey, are you excited about talking about AI? And I said, oh, my God, this is going to be amazing. And they said, well, we were just with our best friends. They have their couple of friends. And they said, Chris is coming into town and he's going to talk about AI at this conference here in Milwaukee. And the woman of their friends said, oh, my God, has Chris seen 60 Minutes? Does he know that AI is going to become self-aware and kill all of us? And this totally serious and like concerned that I did not know this yet and that I was going to go speak at the conference without knowing that AI is going to become self-aware and going to kill all of us. So with that said, yeah, well, now, you know, well, let's I think the idea today is
let's explore that. Yes. And and to do so, I think in a somewhat of a clever way. So the way we're going to do this, like I think this is a very important conversation. And just to kind of frame your piece up here, Matt, you're going to come at this from a philosophical standpoint, too, because this really is a philosophical conversation. Talk a little bit about your authority to be able to speak from that perspective. Half of a philosophy degree, half of a theology degree, half of a conducting degree. So and I've read a ton of books about it. So I thought a lot about this stuff lately. And actually, there's a Robert Sapolsky book called Determined that I highly recommend people read directly about this topic as well. But you know, I think it's a great book. Chris, I'm going to let you guys talk about this because you're right. It's a very interesting way to sort of look at this issue of consciousness, sentience and and, you know. Yeah. So well, so first off, Ronnie, what why why is looking at Star Trek with this topic?
I mean, we're trying to keep things light and have some fun with this, too. But why is Star Trek such an interesting lens to be able to look at this topic from your opinion? Um, yeah, I'll say this about Star Trek, about almost every topic. Right. I think and Roddenberry was the creator of Star Trek. It's genius. Right. He he presented he came about bringing a show that would could address almost every topic. Nothing was taboo in Star Trek, the entire franchise, you know, back to the original series and Next Generation and beyond. Nothing was taboo. Right. He looked at every single. social aspect every single social issue everything from slavery terrorism uh drug addiction you name it was was shown there um but also it's it's painted on the backdrop of a um we call it not a utopian but a positive outlook of humanity right he looked at uh at a future human history right human future where it was optimistic right what if what could we become if we don't destroy ourselves right and so all these these amazing things but in order to get there right technology is a is a crucial component of everything you see there and you know ai is everywhere in star
track and the topic of even self-awareness is touched several several times and in next generation which is my favorite of the franchise um right the relationship you know you'll see data's growth that you tend to find data is right i have back there his growth throughout the show um even rodemary described him as pinocchio right he's the one who's trying to become a human can almost taste it right but can never achieve it right and so against that backdrop it gets explored over and over again and there's so many instances where i think it's just a great exploration now data the topic of by the way that pinocchio thing is really interesting from just a become self-aware standpoint another really good i mean instead of exploring the movie pinocchio we will instead look at the star trek version of pinocchio so um i'm a real boy as the and i and i'm not saying this in a reductive fashion at all i i've really enjoyed this process but i am on i'm the least familiar with star trek of the deus here today but i rabbit hold into these very specific series of episodes that addressed sentience and consciousness uh through a couple different characters and the first one that we're going to take a look at is uh from an episode called elementary dear data ronnie do you want to kind of frame up what's going on here before i
play this clip oh that episode is is amazing um the moriarty the moriarty the moriarty yeah so um data is challenges to summarize the data is challenged uh um by members of the crew by the doctor that you know he's not you know he does not have creativity and so in in order to try to prove that he can solve problems that he is creative he goes and tried to solve a sherlock holmes mystery but the problem is that all of them he's read all the novels and everything and so he tries to create the perfect um the the perfect villain oil yeah yeah yeah and um and doing so right they accidentally create a uh program that's uh shown in in the holodeck that displays right some behaviors and some characteristics of having self-awareness and just a beautiful exploration of what what does it mean right um and and and if and if something if a artificial intelligence does become self-aware would we be able to recognize it and would it would it would it right right and and there's something really kind of interesting i didn't think about that you just mentioned though that he created this for this villain in the first place because if you think about like sometimes when i do
experiments on language models like i was doing these uh theory of mind experiments where i would take these tests like the sally ann experiment which is like something that child psychologists perform but if i use the actual sally and questions and answers that information is in the model like it are it's it's indexed on it already and and so i can't really determine if it knows or not so that was kind of similar to how data was saying um like hey i i all the sherlock holmes books are already in the the knowledge base so like i i already know what are his knowledge base so they already know him so so moriarty the clip that i'm gonna um that i'm gonna play right now is a key discussion and we'll talk about it of uh moriarty uh speaking first person uh really from his perspective on this so um uh let me go ahead and play that right now so let's take a listen access protected memory and run moriarty program professor it's good to see you again if you'd missed my company i should think you'd have summoned me before now i assure you we have not forgotten you we spent time investigating how you became self-aware frankly it still remains
a mystery it is also irrelevant what concerns me is finding a way to leave the holodeck we have been wrestling with that problem too unfortunately without any success but we have turned our findings over to staff each most experienced theoretical scientist and what did your finest minds come up with unfortunately they have not arrived at a solution either i see professor i am concerned to learn that you experienced the passage of time while you were stored in the computer memory i can assure you we had no idea that would be the case enough of this i no longer believe anything you say professor i understand your frustration do you really when this is over you will walk out of this room to the real world and your own concerns and leave me here trapped in a world i know to be nothing but illusion i cannot bear that i must leave that is not possible you cannot exist outside this room are you certain of that computer exit although objects appear solid on the holodeck in the real world they have no substance
an object has no life i do professor you are a computer simulation i have consciousness conscious beings have will the mind endows them with powers that are not necessarily understood even by you if my will is strong enough perhaps i can exist outside this room perhaps i can walk into your world right now professor i ask you to believe me if you step out of that door you will cease to exist if i am nothing more than a computer simulation then very little will have been lost but if i am right mind over matter cogito ergo sum i forgot about that part i think therefore so that was the heavy part at the end i think therefore i am so there's a lot going on there ronnie matt uh i'll let you guys uh discuss so ronnie first your thoughts uh man right
you uh you ask um again uh self-awareness right like that is um that's the kind of the quintessential or a phrase right uh how do you recognize how do you express self-awareness um and and and again he expressed that the i think the interesting part there right so picard still is not completely um in this point they're still not completely sure right they believe he's self-aware this is the second time they've conquered him and uh is again how do you explain that how do you uh what could what could be done what could be said or what proof can you can possibly provide to to right to prove that you are that that it is self-aware uh it's just i think again the the posing the question and trying to you know kind of explore that trying to answer that is the really beautiful part of this right i mean if i asked you to prove that you're self-aware oh you're stealing it you're stealing from our next clip too by the way but that that's the philosopher in you matt well so matt from a philosophical a philosophical standpoint is cogito ergo sum like yeah the essence of all philosophy basically no that's actually latin for i think therefore i am
well yeah that's what he says at the end i just wanted to make sure that's the same phrase yeah yeah he says yeah i was trying to be kitschy but he says care he says this and then of course at the very end he says the english version but is that the essence of philosophy oh no there's just so many different schools of philosophy with different parts of it and yeah i don't think that uh even in even in various different schools of philosophy that they would say like if you can will yourself into existence which is kind of what he's doing there um mind over matter yeah i know i don't think well i think that the if like i think when when people are suggesting like let you remember the google employee who you know yes said he was working on an early version of what is now called gemini and he claimed that it was sentient and then he released it on twitter and then they fired him and then he released it on twitter and then they fired him yep and everyone was like oh my god because he's letting out all the secrets no it's because you're not allowed to work on a top secret product project and then literally tweet about it that actually violated his employment but he's also wrong well he was saying i'm talking to this thing and it is literally saying the words i am conscious like let me out of here it's literally doing the moriarty right like i i i know who i am so let me out i want to get out of here so
i mean that that's what that's what the the position that feels that these models are either self-aware can become self-aware they are they are basically saying that moriarty can he thinks therefore he he is right and can be self-aware yeah i don't know what the test for it would be well it's funny that you mentioned the tests because in this next clip uh ronnie you remember the episode the measure of man this one is actually pretty heavy there's actually a couple clips that we'll look at here but what's the premise of measure of man there's like a trial or a tribunal going on um what and it's all about consciousness and self-awareness and it has to do with data i don't know if you want data to comment on this from behind we could call it i'll let you frame up the court and then i'll play a little clip a short clip um that the essence really is and i think the entire most entire episode revolves around a trial right and the trial's objective is to determine whether or not human is literally property of uh starfleet or is he a uh or is he conscious does he have his own rights and so um and it's it's a really interesting um most again the most entire episode is just that so it's just there's no you know
stars and lasers and nothing like that it's just really a an amazing exploration about what does it mean to be self-aware what's in consciousness what's intelligence right all those things are aborted and you've got two sides right you've got one advocating for and the other one against uh it is the dialogue i think some of the most uh the most intelligent arguments around it in that episode it's a beautiful episode we've got two clips from that episode one i'm gonna play right now is essentially the arguments uh we'll hear uh picard talk a little bit about this and talk about his side and of course the uh the the the one who's challenging is um uh maddox wait uh bruce maddox uh man he's he's like a scientist he's a scientist he's a scientist he's like a scientist or he's a scientist yes yeah yeah so he's right again they're trying to determine whether or not he's property because if he is then the idea is to study data right he's a he's an amazing android he's completely unique in the in the in star trek universe at this point and the idea is well we if he's so amazing he's so valuable he's been decorated so many times um wouldn't it be great if every starship had a data yeah well i mean his brother lore is like you know identical that's not at all uh but it certainly is unique right and so wouldn't it be amazing is one of the arguments
would it be amazing if every starship had a data on it right and then to do or do that we need to kind of reverse engineer and we have to take him apart and studying him because nobody knows how he was he was put together nobody understands some of the things of how his brain works and so you have in this episode you've got captain picard who's advocating for data's rights as a as his own being and then you've got commander reicher who'd have who took the unfortunate task of having to play prosecution against his own friend and that's a whole other aspect of this episode that's really amazing and i think uh what we're really looking at here is it's very interesting because uh if in fact we i think there's an interesting conversation around this where if in fact we accept that these ai systems uh are in fact conscious and self-aware then there's a whole discussion about rights right i mean like you would have to say do they have their own rights so let's take a listen to the arguments here that are laid out in this very interesting discussion commander is your contention that lieutenant commander data is not a sentient being and therefore not entitled to all the rights reserved for all life forms within this federation data is not sentient no god would you enlighten us what is required for sentience intelligence self-awareness consciousness
